مهرجان العلم

The Abu Dhabi Science Festival (ADSF) is an annual event that has been held under the patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahya since 2011.


It is open to the public and offers a wide variety of scientific activities facilitated by Science Communicators. It started off in Abu Dhabi and has recently expanded to Sharjah.​

OBJECTIVE

Aims to inspire the nation’s youth through science-related hands-on activities, and is part of a wider strategy to build a talent base in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in the UAE.​​

INITIATIVE DETAILS

  • The ADSF is a 10-day festival offering the latest from the world’s leading science and technology providers including a wide array of activities for all ages including exhibitions, interactive exhibitions, shows, workshops, schools tents, etc.
  • The ADSF website features a “Science for You” section designed by Edinburgh International Science Festival where students can download fun STEM-related activities.
  • Science Communicators, i.e. higher education students trained to be world-class experts, are recruited to become science communicators in ADSF. They facilitate workshops, inspire youth, explain exhibits and perform scientific demonstrations. An award ceremony is organized in their honor.
  • In 2012, ADSF launched the Organized School Tour Program in partnership with ADEC. A month ahead of the festival, ADSF tours schools to introduce the festival’s upcoming activities.

KEY OUTCOMES

  • In 2012, the festival attracted more than 120,000 visitors, an increase of 20% . Moreover, over 20,000 students from 224 schools attended through organized tours coo
  • The number of science communicators went up 60%.
  • In 2014, the Science Festival expanded to Sharjah. Over 150 students from HCT Sharjah Men’s and Women’s colleges have been recruited as Science Communicators to work onsite and deliver the Festival’s content.
