Under the guidance and vision of our great Leaders and the nurturing of HE Dr Mugheer Al Khaili and his team, ADEC is developing and shaping the Abu Dhabi Schools system and curriculums to become a vision of success. Child centred and with future global leaders in mind ADEC is keeping up with the fast pace in educational developments and ensuring that our children, our Nation's future, are receiving the best education with up to date technology, experienced and qualified teachers. At Al Mushrif School we, the Parent Council, are proud and honoured to be a part of ADEC's progress and vision of the future and help integrate more parents and families into school life and activities.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to ADEC for the many positive developments in our schools with the introduction of the New School Model. The emphasis on qualified teachers and the introduction of new teaching methods that recognize that students learn in different ways, will lead I believe to more successful students. ADEC are developing and adjusting the systems, facilities, purpose built learning environments and resources to ensure our children can compete globally, whilst retaining a sense of pride in our culture and heritage. I am proud my son is able to experience this and am committed to supporting this through the Parent Council.

Educational performance has been developed through the provision of educator tools including equipment and teaching aids and also through the innovation of teaching methods. One example of innovation in teaching methodology is the cancellation of final exams at the end of every semester and their replacement with continuous evaluation throughout the semester. The shift from final evaluation to continuous evaluation has led to the mitigation of burdens and pressures on students as well as parents, most significantly by ending student exam fear. Overall, this has created a comfortable, relaxed environment more conducive to learning for students.

Amongst the positive changes that the ADEC has introduced to the education system is the extensive development of curriculum; most of which is related to the regional environment. The goal of this curriculum development is to incorporate a diversity of learning tools the students encounter on a regular basis outside the classroom such as modern means of communication and incorporate them into the classroom. The students expand their conception of learning beyond books by utilizing this modern technology for educational purposes.

The positive aspects of the education system are accessibility of the internet. This has led to the enhanced communication between the school and home.

Let's speak about the positive aspects of the new education system! It actually goes a step forward in the teaching methods. It began with ending learning by rote. It ended with students studying on their own. I cannot help but feel happy when I see our children keen on reading and doing their research in their books based on international standards. They conduct research outside the classroom utilizing technological tools such as the internet and technology is also incorporated into their classroom experience.

According to OECD:

“Individuals who become self-directed learners are able to acquire expert knowledge in various fields, to change careers, and to endow meaningful lives with creativity and variety.

Developing these capacities is not only important for a successful economy, but also for effective social engagement, participatory democracy, and more equitable communities”.

This is happening now in Al Ameen School. We want to be part of this change. Thanks to ADEC’s New School Model.

We have many more activities than before. Families used to say no to the activities we wanted to expose students to, but now the parents are much more open minded and supportive about any new initiatives we wish to implement for the sake of their children. Families are actually the ones who request these extracurricular activities for their children. In the past, parents did not understand how we would be able to mix boys and girls or if it would be good to do this, but now they see that it is a good thing. They now understand the purpose and benefit of it. We also have teachers from many different cultures and I see this as a good thing.

Schools now consist of more resources such as smartboards, computers and many other types of technology for students and teachers to use. ADEC has provided these resources as well as the new buildings so that good teaching can take place.

Students are happier now. They are more independent. The teacher is now the coach and the student is able to work independently as well as in groups. Teachers are now comfortable teaching the New School Model. We are developing leaders and they are interested in learning. Student participation has increased. Skills are now identified as outcomes. Books used to be the only teaching tool. Now schools are more interesting for students as well as for teachers.

The New School Model has helped in many ways and has proven to be great for our children who are now smarter because of it. They are able to think and answer on their own – with their own ideas. Children now use their imagination so much more than before.

Children are now encouraged to think on their own, problem solve and share ideas with each other. Before teachers taught basic facts that students had to memorize. Students have become better and are more confident. ADEC has brought experienced teachers to the UAE as well as resources and technology.

The New School Model has helped in many ways. Our children are now smarter because of it. They are able to think and answer on their own – with their own ideas. Children now use their imagination so much more than before. If we, as teachers, give them the beginning they are able to think from there and have creative ideas to add and share with all.

ADEC's New School Model has been applied in 2010/2011 and made our children to think on their own. They solve problems and share their ideas with each other. Before, teachers taught basic facts that the students had to memorize. Now it is better. The students have become better students and are more confident. ADEC has brought experienced teachers to the UAE as well as resources and technology and professional development programs for teachers.

I highly appreciate ADEC’s professional development initiatives with us teachers, who require personal development and to become an effective member in the learning community. Raising public awareness about professional learning communities with the aim of implementing them in real life and making them a permanent feature of educational learning communities is a huge contribution from ADEC’s side, and that will help us achieve major goals in a world of an increasing knowledge era. (Quote from Ms. Rafi’a Al Thaheri’s University PD -thesis, 2012. Steps Towards Excellence in education.)

ADEC has helped encourage a professional learning community in schools, where everybody is learning; the school principal, teachers, students and all stakeholders. Everyone is involved in the task of learning, innovation and progress. Everyone is working hard on personal and collective improvement to achieve the desired goals and results.(Quote from Ms. Rafi’a Al Thaheri’s University PD -thesis in Steps Towards Excellence in education, 2012.)

Profesional development students expressed that their motivation grew towards teaching, studying and researching. They felt that they had the necessary support and care in order to carry out their studies successfully. They were empowered due to the encouragement towards constructive, critical thinking. Furthermore, the chance of expressing personal opinions built up students’ self-confidence. (Mentor to Mentor, 2012, Tuula Kallio, Hilkka Koivistoinen, Kati Loponen.)

My participation in the University PD Programme is one of the best and happiest moments in my life. In my appreciation for what my country, the UAE, and ADEC has offered me, I will do my best to rise up to the responsibility and to the coming generations with focus on enhancing my knowledge in Science and other sectors. (Quote from Ms. Balgees Ahmed Al Kindi’s University PD –thesis in Steps Towards Excellence in Education, 2012.)

As per the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development: “Self-educators gain the ability to acquire knowledge from experts in all fields, and change their careers as well as enjoy a life full of creativity and diversity. Development of capabilities is not limited to its importance for successful economy only, but it extends to effective community-based participation, and consequently the community becomes more capable to attain equality”.

This is exactly what Al Ameen School is currently implementing, as it would like to be part of this change. Thanks to the new school model introduced by ADEC.

Speaking out of my experience and my interaction as a teacher who is keen on personal development and becoming an effective member in the learning community, I have noticed a great need for raising public awareness about professional learning communities with the aim of implementing them in real life and making them a permanent feature of educational learning communities. This is important as we are part of an organization that is seeking development and achievement of major goals in a world of increasing knowledge era.

Ms. Rafi’a Al Thaheri indicated (in her University PD -thesis, 2012: Steps Towards Excellence in education) that in a professional learning community everybody is learning; the headmasters, the teachers, the students and all the stakeholders. Everyone is involved in the task of learning, innovation and progress. Everyone is working hard on personal and collective improvement to achieve the desired goals and results.

PD students expressed that their motivation grew towards teaching, studying and researching. They felt that they had the necessary support and care in order to carry out the studies successfully. They were empowered due to the encouragement towards constructive, critical thinking. Furthermore, the chance of expressing personal opinions built up students’ self-confidence.

A teacher: My participation in the University PD Programme is one of the best and happiest moments in my life. I will do my best to rise up the coming generations on the bases of science and knowledge. In order to say thank you to my country.

 Parents

ADEC has introduced a developed and innovative curriculum which allows parents to monitor their children's progress in terms of study and behavior. Our monitoring of our children’s progress was enabled by the usage of interaction which allowed us to be interactively connected to the school. Thanks a million!

I see that the new academic system is continuously improving. I really like the three-semester system. It allows the students to take their breath within the semesters so that they can come back to their school feeling refreshed and ready to learn more. I noticed that my child has improved in English after the implementation of the three-semester system.

Education has certainly developed with more emphasis on a students’ progress. Students are taught how to become socially connected to others in the community, as well as are encouraged to care more about their academic progress. Schools are now all child centred, which is great. ADEC definitely picks their teachers and provides them with all the necessary professional development training required. At first we were slightly resilient regarding teaching styles, but now we appreciate all the recent educational reforms that ADEC has introduced, since it has proven to benefit students, parents and of course teachers.

I feel the education process has improved in many ways. Today’s my first day to visit my child’s school, and I can tell you that I see a huge difference in my children’s English language skills, and among my family members children, who also attend the same school. (My sisters are in grades 2, 4 and 5; my brother’s daughter is in grade 3; and I have a daughter in grade 2).

Education no longer depends on rote learning and memorization, but on practical and advance knowledge gathering. Schools now focus on assessment and in addressing the child’s weaknesses.

The emphasis on English language skills are far better than they used to be during our days in public schools. Our children are now better in English, solve harder Mathematics questions, which they are able to handle very well and technology resources help promote research and independence.

We had no technology before or any interest in it. There was no promotion of the English language before. Educators are now taking care of things much better. ADEC has played a very important role in developing the level of students. They take good care of making sure the schools have subject content knowledge and that they are teaching related things.

Everything is perfect now. The leaders here are very active and involved. I would have told His Highness this if I would have seen him during his visit last week to my child’s school. School operators also help support their schools and the leadership here. They make a good team. I would tell Dr. Mugheer this, as well.

At first I thought the way the teachers were teaching was different but I now see that they are good and they benefit our children. I have seen excellent development in my children and I now encourage the New School Model, even though I used to question it before.

A parent of grade 3 student emphasized on the great development of education compared to the past. Now, education is concerned with student as a whole. It focuses on other aspects of the student's life and the academic side. Then, student is –generally- the focus area of school. This is good. ADEC takes care to follow the latest teaching methods. There is something I want to express, that we –at first- thought the latest methods were strange, but they proved a remarkable improvement in our students' levels.

I have been married for quite some time now, and today I visit the school of my children and I see a great change in the English language and communication skills of my children and my family members enrolled in this school.

Education in the past was more concentrated on just memorizing and learning by rote or by memorizing by heart. It is now more practical and advanced and reinforcing. We now do much more with assessment and addressing the child’s weaknesses.

Education is now better because English has more of an influence. Math has become more difficult. I am new to the area and to ADEC schools. I have come from Ras Alkheima. The technology resources in the schools has improved due to ADEC focusing on this.

The uses of technology in Education contributed to create attractive learning environment. Teacher are now taking care of it in teaching process to support educational process. ADEC has played a very important role in developing the level of students. They take good care of making sure the schools have subject content knowledge and that they are teaching related things.

I have seen excellent development in my children and I now encourage the new school model even though I used to question it before. I believe, though, we still need more books for our students so that we as parents can help at home. We need books to do this so that the information we help teach at home is accurate. This way the children will come to school more ready for study.

 Students

We used to eat in the hallways. Now we have a new building. I told my mother that I do not want to leave this school at the end of the year and that I want to do the year again. I love it here! Technology is better. We learn better. We learn English and we are preparing ourselves for university.

We have lockers and we learn more things. In our old school we did not learn as much. We now learn English and write proficient English and go home and teach our parents English. It feels good to be able to do this. Everything is different.

We are in a big school now and we learn English and write many stories. Our teacher helps us. She waits for the answers to come from us in order to encourage us to use our imagination. Teachers are also very patient, they understand us and are interested in our development.

What we are learning in our school is similar to what my friend who is in university is taking in some of her subjects! I already know more than some university students!

Before the school doors were made out of wood and we could not see in or out. Now it is more open and we learn so much more. If we do not know an answer, our teacher helps us and is patient with us. Our principal speaks English and that is good for us.

I like school. We have lockers. We transition like a university does and we even have a swimming pool and a canteen and a big library. Our school is beautiful. We have our work exposed on our school walls. We have smartboards where before we had green boards with chalk. Before we leave we may even have ipads! (I hope).

I like this school because of the learning environment. When I was small there were no English teachers. Now, we go to our science lab and do scientific experiments. Before we only read about science. Now we do it. We also know how to use powerpoint and smartboards. We have celebrations around our heritage and we go to trips.

We learn about all the things that we did not know about. Our teacher is patient with us and asks us all kinds of questions that helps us learn even more. We work in groups a lot. Before we had to sit by ourselves. We use so much technology now and we know a lot of Math as well as English. My school is colorful and the bathrooms are nice and clean. They are like the airport bathrooms.

Now school canteens are different. We used to eat in the hallways. Now we have a new building. I want to complete my learning in ADEC’s schools. I love it! Technology is better. We learn better and we are preparing for the universities.

Now it is different. We have lockers and we learn more things. We now receive bilingual learning and become fluent in English and Arabic. It feels good to be able to do this.

Our teacher helps us. She waits for the answers to come to our brains. She is patient. She understands us and she helps us learn.

Learning environment and classrooms become more attractive, they motivate us to create and think. We have our work on the wall. This is good. Also, the school buildings are equipped with the latest technology and high speed internet. This helps us to search for information and analyze it.

I love my school. It includes a lot of facilities and classrooms, including a swimming pool, canteen and a library has many useful books. Also, we use smartboards in the classroom.

School day is full of activities and programs that develop our skills. We now go to our science lab and do scientific experiments. We implement what we learn in the summer projects. At the same time, we have celebrations around our heritage and we go to trips.

We learn about all things that we do not know about. I enjoy much more to learn in groups as it help to share ideas and discuss it so that we reach the best results.
